I've come back and viewed this photo a number of times and I keep admiring the stark beauty of this church. It tells such a story of endurance of the church and of the people. The cloudy dark skies accentuate the crisp outlines of the building, pushing it to the viewers eye. I like very much. Thank you for sharing.

Definitely a treasure! You've captured the flat prairie landscape, the few trees and the open skies. Looking at this image I'm reminded of the feel of autumn chill in the air and the sight of a cold front coming in from the north. Our prairie hamlets and villages are becoming ghost towns as people are drawn to the cities. A way of life is changing as churches are boarded up ... and the old wooden grain elevators are being torn down. For me your beautiful work has captured, and will help to preserve, part of our history. Thank you!

Blair Wainman replied:

Wow!! Thank you Rhonda for your awesome comment!! It was an autumn day and it was cold and with a few added textures I tried to enhance the atmosphere that was there. I love the Canadian Prairies and try my best to preserve not only the physical beauty but some of the historical beauty as well!! Thanks for your inspiration and support!!

Artist's Description

Zion Lutheran Church of Flowing Well is a Municipal Heritage Property located in the Rural Municipality of Lawtonia No. 135, 21.5 kilometres north-east of the Village of Hodgeville, Saskatchewan, Canada. The property features a wood-frame, country church constructed in 1919 that is distinguished by a tall, ornamented steeple, and a cemetery which was established in 1910. The heritage value of Zion Lutheran Church of the Flowing Well lies in its status as a continuous meeting place for its congregation since it was constructed in 1919. Replacing a smaller structure erected shortly after the church's founding in 1910, the present structure was needed to serve the expanding congregation. Many members of the congregation are buried in the property's cemetery, including several of the original German-speaking, Russian settlers. The property is also valued as a tangible reminder of the community of Flowing Well. In addition to the church, the community also included the Johan Reichenberg...
