In the Army as a young man, I was a generalís cook. I nearly went into the restaurant business when I was discharged. But after earning my bachelorís degree at San Jose State University, I began teaching art at Soledad prison in 1958.
Somebody knew that I grew up in San Francisco in a rough neighborhood, and it worked out pretty good. I completed a masterís degree in art at Stanford University in 1963 and was active in the Salinas, Carmel, Monterey and San Jose areas. I did numerous one-man shows and painted and exhibited with other artists as Group Five.
