Boldt the famous owner of the Waldorf Astoria Hotel in New York City, began construction of a full-size Rhineland castle. He chose Heart Island near Alexandria Bay on the St. Lawrence River to build a six-story, 120 room castle for his wife Louise. Sadly, she died suddenly during construction in 1904. George immediately stopped further work on the castle and never returned to Heart Island. For 73 years the castle remained empty and subjected to the ravages of weather and time. Then in 1977, the 1000 Islands Bridge Authority acquired the property, began restoration efforts and opened the castle to the public.
