Chinese religious leaders, known as the three holy ones. Confucius (551-479 BC, lower left) founded the quasi-religious system of Confucianism. Gautama Buddha (c.563-483 BC, upper centre), from India, founded Buddhism. Lao Tse, who lived around the 4th or 6th centuries BC, founded Taoism. Artwork from Recherche sur les Superstitions en Chine (Henri Dore, 1914 edition).
