Clements Markham (1830-1916), British geographer. Markham began his career in the Navy before moving to the civil service. These positions allowed him to explore South America, particularly Peru, and India. He was responsible for the introduction of chinchona plants, whose bark is a source of the anti-malarial quinine, to India from Peru. In 1893 he was elected President of the Royal Geographical Society, having previously held the position of Honorary Secretary from 1863 to 1888. During his time he championed Antarctic exploration, organising the National Antarctic Expedition of 1901-1904.
