Like a lot of WWI era aircraft the DR1 employed an all flying rudder as opposed to a fin and rudder. The control cable for the rudder can be seen exiting through the fabric just in front of the LE of the stabilizer.

Pat Speirs replied:

Thanks for the update - appreciated.

You might find my image of a Foker DR1 interesting check it out at

Pat Speirs replied:

Nice image and a truly dramatic skyscape - good use of model flying, no rudder control??

The Nieuport 17, next to the Foker D7, is probably my favorite aircraft from WWI. Thanks for sharing this image. V&F

Pat Speirs replied:

Thanks for your comment, Nieuport always looks good but unfortunately there are not too many D7s about. Have one image which I will post some time soon. Thanks, again...Pat

Artist's Description

Close Encounter - WW1 variety. A Nieuport 17 of Escadrille Lafayette - Aviation Militaire - sweeps past a German Fokker Dr1 Triplane no doubt savouring the starboard wing strike with a - Touch, Msieur le Baron Rouge - en passant. Both aircraft types were mainstays of the separate air arms during 1917 with the 17 also serving with the RFC as the preferred mount of aces such as Ball and Bishop. As a preview of things to come some French 17s carried up to eight Le Prieur rockets mounted on the interplane struts. . Latterly the Nieuport 28, the final development variant, also served with the American Expeditionary Force from mid 1918.
