Close-up of fire coral (Millepora dichotoma). Fire corals are not true corals, but hydrozoans or hydroids. Visible here are small hairs that are covered in cells called nematocysts, which can fire tiny stings. The fire coral uses them as a defence mechanism against fish that may feed upon it as well as against prey for food. The small, individual polyps that form the coral can be seen.
