Artist's Description

Coconut rope production, 19th-century artwork. The fibres for this rope are obtained from the husk of the coconut, producing a material known as coir. Here, workers are extracting the fibres from the husk of the coconuts (left). Other workers are winding threads from bundles of coir (centre and right). This type of rope is mostly produced in southern India and Sri Lanka, though it is also produced on Pacific and Caribbean islands. Artwork from the 17th volume (first period of 1896) of the French popular science weekly 'La Science Illustree'.
