This print is very nice. I plan to get a orange mat board and some kind of rustic wood frame. Colors are beautiful!

I drew this view of the Flavian Amphitheater, aka the Colosseum, to highlight the de-construction and show how the 1900 year old structure looks today. While the columns and capitols that adorn the standing outside wall are iconic, the view into the interior hallways was more dramatic. This drawing looks inside the passage ways of the outer two rings and up at the inside of the north outer wall. My drawing was created by combining the ambiance of the afternoon sunlight and nighttime spotlights. The Colosseum was built by Vespasian and his son Titus between AD 69 and AD 80. The square blocks of travertine, tufa, brick and marble are held together with iron clamps, not mortar. In almost continuous use between AD 80 and 1550 the Colosseum has housed many activities other than gladiators. Nowadays it is religious services and rock concerts. Restoration, reconstruction and capping of the remaining structure began in 1805 and conti...
About Norman Bean
It always amazes me .... everything our eyes see is reflected light (photons bouncing toward our face). By way of a biological electro-chemical miracle this sensitive visual system transfers information to the brain, the home of the 'Phantom Captain,' where depth, detail, contrast, texture, color, shadow, light, perspective, point of view and everything you can discern, all come together as Reality. In creating a work of art the Artist seeks to trick other Phantom Captains into believing that a flat piece of paper has depth and dimensions. That there, on a flat sheet of drawing paper, down in the image, is a reality. A beautiful, shiny and interesting reality. An Artist has many ways with which to coax the graphite...

Grazie Giada & Roberto. Ho visitato Roma durante la Settimana della Cultura Italiana nel 2011. Ho passato molte ore intorno al Colosseo in diversi momenti del giorno e della notte per creare una vista non tradizionale.

Awesome composition Norman!
Norman Bean replied:
Thank you Pristine, The Colosseo drawing was a bit challenging to create. I did stand there looking into the de-constructed hallways wondering how to picture what I had in my mind's eye. A bit of the late afternoon light, and a bit of the evening indoor lighting. I like your whimsical paintings: Wedding Dia de los Muertos...

Thank you. I enjoyed creating this image. The angle is standing by the Arco di Costantino looking up at the Colosseo. Sort of a combination of afternoon and early evening light and shade. Lots of history, many stories.
