Just what I wanted for a new iPhone. A special “Thank You” to artist ‘Serge Averbukh’ for the addition, at my request, to the design of my Navy rating, the lightening bolts (sparks as they are/were called) in the middle of the CPO insignia. I asked; he came through….When I use my phone, it brings back fond memories of my 20-year Navy career…. Thanks Serge….

Calopteryx splendens cretensis the Cretan subspecies of the Banded Demoiselle resting above a shallow stream in Rethymnon praefecture. In other parts of Europe the blue on the wings does not extend nearly to the ends but forms a distinctive stripe. DNA studies suggest that the Cretan variety is actually very widely separated from the mainland populations and probably merits species status in its own right.
Several other creatures on the Greek island have been elevated from sub-species or variety status up to the rank of distinct species. This is not particularly surprising, as geographical separation is a key step in the emergence of new species - slightly different selection pressures or just random genetic drift cause the gene pool to change once it can no longer mix freely with the main gene-pool - and Crete has been separated from the main European land mass for a very long time, perhaps some 12,000 years.
