About the Image

Digital Orca by Alexis Birkill

A photograph of Douglas Coupland's Digital Orca sculpture, located outside the Vancouver Convention Centre. For this photograph, I wanted to be able to blur the lights of North Vancouver in the background. However, due to the size of the sculpture, it's very hard to do this, as you need a wide-angle lens with a very shallow depth of field -- something I don't have. In order to take this shot I therefore tried the Brenizer Method for the first time. This uses a side-effect of the panorama creation process -- by stitching together photos taken with a telephoto lens with a shallow depth of field (in this case, my 1970s Pentacon 135mm f/2.8 prime lens), you are creating a resultant image which is wide-angle but retains the shallow depth...

About the Artist - Alexis Birkill

Alexis Birkill

Born in the UK, I moved to Vancouver, BC in 2011. My career in photography has grown from a long-held passion for capturing the beauty of the world, aided on the technical side by my background as a software developer. I specialise in fine art photography of landscapes, seascapes and cityscapes in and around the Pacific Northwest, with work exhibited internationally. Many of my photographs feature the beautiful city of Vancouver, but as well as capturing its iconic cityscapes, I can often be found exploring the BC and Washington coastline for new photographic opportunities, as well as developing my portfolio of night sky photographs featuring the Milky Way and the Aurora Borealis. My 2014 calendar can be ordered here. var _gaq =...
