I was recently on a trip back east to Philadelphia and visited the Eastern State Prison. This is an amazing penitentiary historic site located in the city. At the same time I had just finished the book by Vincent bugliosi titled 'Divinity of Doubt, God and Atheism on Trial". I was moved to produce this piece based on my impressions of the book and the images I saw at the penitentiary.
The Eastern State was, according to the guide book, the world's first true penitentiary designed to inspire penitence....or true regret....in the hearts of criminals. There are seven cellblocks spread like the spokes of a wheel with running water and central heat incorporated into the structure. It was run by the Quakers. Its cells have sky-lit windows and an area for each inmate to go outdoors. Originally the inmates could not talk to anyone or each other and many, instead of being rehabilitated, simply went insane. The prison today is a true ruin and said to be haunted. It is crumbling do...
