This painting is part of my older "modernist miniatures" series, done with Delta PermEnamel Paint on Tile in the early 2000's. The colors in this type of paint are actually rather flat, but I managed to work them into an oil effect. I'd plop bits of different colors onto ordinary ceramic tiles, 4x4" or 7x7" in size, then just swish them around, adding layers, strokes, dabs... and see where they go, what develops. Often, a dream-like landscape scene would emerge -- what I call my "dreamscapes" -- or, if it got weird or figurative, "otherscapes". I'd then add details, try to layer and suggest... as if the medium were oil, the technique sometimes impressionist. And lo and behold -- this one, on small 4x4, turned into an imaginary scene of a medieval countryside... perhaps in France?... with castles and manors in the distance, rural peasants (working folk) stopping for a rest in the foreground -- one struggling to pull his mule forward!
