Artist's Description
Eel eggs. Light micrograph of the eggs of the Japanese eel, Anguilla japonicum. The eggs are transparent and the developing embryos can be seen within them. A. japonicum spends its adult life in freshwater rivers along the coast of China, Korea and Japan. The eels migrate to spawn in the Pacific Ocean west of the Mariana Islands. The adults die after spawning. The eggs hatch about 36 hours after fertilisation, releasing a larva about 3 millimetres long. The eel larvae live at a depth of about 75m. They are swept along by ocean currents back towards the Asian mainland. Magnification x5 at 35mm size.
