Electric tram junction points. 19th-century artwork of the layout of contact pads at a junction for an electric tram system. The layout ensures that traction (electric power to push the tram) is maintained as it turns the corner. Electric trams had been demonstrated in France in 1881, but were not built and opened until the 1890s. These junction points are part of what was called the Lacroix system. Artwork from the first volume (1897) of 'La Revue Scientifique et Industrielle' by French chemist and inventor Jules-Louis Breton (1872-1940).
