About the Image

Europe Tab III France by Scott Nelson

A reproduction from the 1695 edition of Ptolemy's Geographia by Gerard Mercator. This is Europe Tab III fdepicting ancient France (Gallia) & Belgium (Belgica) in the second century AD. Ptolemy's Geographica was the first world atlas, and master mapmaker Gerard Mercator used Ptolemy's ancient coordinates to produce this edition, which was in print in various forms for most of the 17th century and is considered the most beautiful of the "modern" versions of the atlas.

About the Artist - Scott Nelson

Scott Nelson

After spending the first half of the '90's as a full time watercolor artist, the combination of family obligations and a hand injury forced me into retirement. Since then I have found plenty of other things to occupy my time, and starting in 2005 I became heavily involved with a wonderful project in Bryansk Russia: the Yolochka Kid's Camp. This camp has had a profound inpact on an entire generation of young people in Southwestern Russia, but the place has had very limited capital improvements since it was built in the '50's as a Young Pioneer Camp by the Soviets. The camp is desperately overdue for important upgrades and repairs, and I have decided to bring back my artwork in an effort to help the cause. I will be keeping the proceeds...
