Kyle Dig
Amazing capture! That looks like a huge/spiky fish (do you know what kind?) caught and staring down its captor's throat here! So does the bird with the fish really manage to win the 4-way battle and gulp that whole thing okay? Does the fish put up a good fight, if eaten does the unlucky prey get swallowed wriggling all the way down as well?!
Thomas Young replied:
Kyle, the fish that is being eaten is a Walleye. The Walleye is flaring its gill plate to make it harder for the Common Merganser to swallow but in the end the bird does swallow the fish. I have witnessed these birds swallowing very large Sheepshead fish. These birds fishing and fighting like this are a comical sight to behold.
