Liver. False-colour scanning electron micrograph of a section of liver tissue showing a group of red blood cells and a macrophage (yellow) in a capillary. Hepatic macrophages, also known as stellate cells of von Kupffer, are mostly found in the venous blood vessels of the liver and are responsible for the destruction of cellular debris, bacteria and aged red blood cells. Two bile canaliculi (green), or cholangioles, are also visible.
