Artist's Description

First use of general anaesthesia. Artwork of US surgeon John C. Warren (1778-1856) operating on a patient who has been anaesthetised by US medical student William T. G. Morton (1819-1868, holding a bottle at left). Collins was the first surgeon to successfully use ether during general surgery, being persuaded to do so by Williams. The operation was performed on 16 October 1846 at the Massachusetts General Hospital. The patient, Gilbert Abbott, was successfully anaesthetised, allowing Warren to remove a tumour from his neck. This painting, by Hinkley, dates from 1882 and is held at the Boston Library, USA.
