Artist's Description

Frederick Douglass (1818 to 1895) was an intellectual, African-American social reformer, orator, writer, and statesman. He was an advisor to two presidents. The painting shows his study in later years, a picture that hung on his wall, his stamp and shackles from the Tropen Museum in Amsterdam symbolizing slavery around the world whether it be labor, financial, sexual, early forced marriage, child labor, etc. Douglass famously said, I would unite with anybody to do right and with nobody to do wrong.
Douglass was born into slavery in the United States in Maryland on the shore of Chesapeake Bay. When Douglass was about twelve years old, a slaveholders wife started teaching him the alphabet. But, Maryland state law prohibited teaching slaves to read. Douglass continued, secretly, to teach himself how to read and write. He then taught other slaves to read. After escaping slavery, he became a leader of the abolitionist movement mostly through of his eloquent writing.

FINDING INSPIRATION TO CREATE FINE ART Nature is an inspiration for many of Jans paintings. She feels encouraged to paint by her surroundings at home in Trabuco Canyon. There are four huge Live Oaks on her property and people have horses, a goat and chickens nearby. There are about a hundred homes in this rural California community at an elevation of about 500 feet at the base of Saddleback Mountain. It gets hot in the summer and rains for a few weeks in the winter. MISSION SAN JUAN CAPISTRANO Jan fell in love with Mission San Juan Capistrano that is a short drive from her home. She spent many days at Mission San Jan Capistrano and has painted many mission scenes. Some of her many photos are displayed. Jan's scenes are embellished...
