Fungus weevil foot. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of the tip of the leg of a fungus weevil (Notioxenus sp.). The end of an insect leg is called the tarsus. The tarsus itself has several segments, and here ends in a pretarsus that is mostly a hairy pad (arolium) and also two small claws (centre and far left). The pad is used for gripping smooth surfaces, the claws for rough surfaces. This weevil is closely associated with a fungus, making it sensitive to environmental changes. It is endemic (found nowhere else) to the small Atlantic island of St Helena, where it is now endangered.
