Description
One of the many resting places in northern France of soldiers from the First World War.
This is a British cemetery and many of the graves are unnamed.
The title of this image is taken from a Wilfred Owen poem.
Move him into the sun
Gently its touch awoke him once,
At home, whispering of fields unsown.
Always it awoke him, even in France,
Until this morning and this snow.
If anything might rouse him now
The kind old sun will know.
Think how it wakes the seeds
Woke, once, the clays of a cold star.
Are limbs so dear-achieved, are sides
Full-nerved,--still warm,--too hard to stir?
Was it for this the clay grew tall?
O what made fatuous sunbeams toil
To break earth's sleep at all?

How apt your title is - given the absolute futility of WWI. Except for the fact that these young men deserve to be remembered, the image only serves to make me sad that we have learned so little in nearly 100 years. Beautiful work. F/V

Futility is a perfect title. For those who do not learn from history are domed to repeat it. The generals of World War I could have learned from Robert E Lee's experience of 1864 (especially the siege of Petersburg). They failed to do so and committed their armies to a massive slaughter. It is good that the people in Europe remember the history of the 20th century and are living in peace.
