About the Image

Giovanni Schiaparelli Lunar Advert by Detlev Van Ravenswaay

Giovanni Schiaparelli lunar advert. Dating from around 1889, this advert (for Liebig's Meat Extract) shows the Italian astronomer Giovanni Schiaparelli (1835-1910) with an early artwork of the Earth as seen from the surface of the Moon. From 1862, Schiaparelli was Director of the Milan Observatory for forty years. In 1866 he showed that meteors follow cometary orbits. In 1877 Mars made one of its closest approaches to Earth enabling him to observe many dark lines criss-crossing the planet. He called these lines 'canali' (channels), which was mistranslated as 'canals'. He also made observations of Mercury, as well as other objects in the solar system.

About the Artist - Detlev Van Ravenswaay

Detlev Van Ravenswaay

Science Photo Library was founded in 1981 by Michael Marten, one of the authors of "Worlds Within Worlds", a book exploring different ways to observe the universe - from electron micrographs, to images of earthrise taken from the Apollo spacecraft. When Marten started receiving requests for the beautiful images in the book, he had an idea of setting up Science Photo Library. Since then, Science Photo Library has continued to work alongside world acclaimed photographers and the leading science and medical experts to provide a central source of the best science and specialist imagery available. Although the collection started with scientific images, it has grown to encompass all aspects of science and their impact on everyday life.
