Artist's Description

Glacier speed measurement. Trimble 4000 SSE Global Positioning System (GPS) receiver used to measure the flow rate of glaciers in Antarctica. The receiver calculates the user's position by measuring the time it takes for signals to arrive from GPS satellites at different points in the sky. By combining readings the receiver's position may be fixed to within a few centimetres. The speed of the ice flow in the glacier is revealed by compiling such measurements over a period of time. The receiving antenna is on a tripod, whilst the instrumentation is stored in the yellow carrying case. Photographed at the British Antarctic Survey's Rothera Station.
