Artist's Description
Regeneration of eucalyptus forest in Kinglake National Park, Victoria Australia. The area around Kinglake suffered the worst effects of the so-called "Black Saturday" bushfires on 7th February 2009. The fire complex eventually destroyed over 300000ha of vegetation and more than 1200 homes; it burned out 99% of Kinglake National Park.The pictures shows an area of the park in January 2013. Four years after the fire, the blackened remains of destroyed trees are visible. In the background, the bushy understorey is the result of regeneration of the burned trees from lignotubers. In the foreground, a group of grass trees, Xanthorrhoea australis, is visible. These plants are probably at least 50 years old, and have regrown from their burned stumps. The two horizontal structures behind the foremost plant are fallen flower spikes from 2012.
