The second shot in a photographic series on my very beat up old sousaphone... what I call my instrument of liberation. It just so happens I was a trained classical musician when doctors told me I had a short time to live. When I went to a music store to sell my french horn I came across this pile of scrap metal on the floor. I soon learned that the scrap pile consisted of parts to four sousaphones being junked. I paid the scrap price and walked out of that shop with everything I needed to rebuild one old sousaphone... and my life. In this shot you can see some of the ersatz techniques used to hold the horn together including bungee chord, electric wire and tape, silk and metallic cordage, antique parts of lamps and houses, etc., etc. Beads, tassels and other inspirations left to me by girl friends have also been woven in along the way. If you look closely you will also spot the garden muse... a china doll head dug up out of my first garden. Something exciting about the sousaphone are...
