Description
The Hill of Tara is one of those places that I'm glad I had a lot of back story before I visited. Even with an excellent guide, it's hard to look at this beautiful landscape and see past the vistas and truly understand what hides beneath the surface.
I visited both the Hill of Tara and Newgrange in the Boyne Valley just before leaving Ireland, but I had spent two days combing the exhibits at the National Museum's Archaeology collection. And in that context, I had seen quite well done exhbiits telling the story of Tara and the excavations that took place there in the 20th century.
So important is the HIll of Tara that it has known successive history. What is more well known in written time is that this was the honorary home of the high kings of Ireland, and it has an impressive advantage when it comes to being the defensive high ground.
But Tara has an older history that was wiped from the surface to make way for those later times. Before that, it was likely a site similar to Newgrange with neolithic chamber tombs and mounds. And knowing that, the gentle mounds you see on the surface in this panorama make so much sense. Echoes of a long ago and unwritten past in Ireland's prehistory.
