Artist's Description
The painting is based on a Turkish legend. The Hodja dreams of going to Istanbul, so he sets out to sell his vegatables at the market with his donkey. Every time he yells out fresh vegetables for sale the donkey brays louder than he can yell. He goes home with his wares and still sits and dreams of his trip to see the Bule Mosque.
About Yvonne Kinney
I am a self taught artist and have worked in oils since 1975. I was living in Italy at the time and had the privilege of studying the Old Masters and working with some fine local artists who introduced me to oils. Up until that time I had been sketching and using the tins of watercolors that my children used in school. As a young wife and mother, I painted on what ever I could find and afford. Once I got into oils I began reading everything I could find on the subject, in an effort to learn as much as possible about this medium. While living in Turkey I heard so many storys about the profit Hodja. Each one was teaching us a lesson such as "he rides his donkey facing backwards because he knows where he is going " but he must see where he has been! The dream and market story was very much loved my my daughters. While we lived there and shoped in the Sat markets as they heard the venders call out their wares they could see how he could not be heard about his donkeys bray. Poor Hodja only got to sit and drean of going to Istanbul.
