When I started out as a young photographer, a teacher asked, "What do you want to shoot?" and I replied, "EVERYTHING!"
Though I was gently disabused of this grandiosity and guided more specifically toward categories where my eye was drawn, over time I realized my original answer was actually pretty close to the right one for me. Because where my eye is drawn is always to the story of an image; the flash of action, the grasp of light, the decisive moment of thought or expression. And every image, it seems - whether portrait, landscape, still life, animal, vegetable or mineral - has its own story in there somewhere. The trick is holding long enough to find it or having the great good fortune of catching it...
