About the Image

Homage To Modigliani II by John Nolan

This piece is from my series of paintings paying homage to the great masters. I chose one of Amedeo Modigliani's many portraits of his tragic partner Jeanne Hebuterne as the backdrop to this paintings. I placed one of Modigliani's sculptures in the foreground. During his early years in Paris most of his energies were devoted to sculpture. He developed his own highly individual style. Although Modigliani was prodigiously talented as both painter and sculptor, he sold little during his lifetime. The still Life with oranges, bowl and jug is based on a Cezanne still life, Apples and Oranges 1895. I decided to explore this piece deliberately because Modigliani submitted to the influence of only one painter, Cezanne.
