Human anatomy. Historical artwork of a human head and torso showing factors thought to influence a person's physical and mental qualities. The locations of 'Mind', 'Intellect' and 'Reckoning' are shown in the head. In the abdomen, the four elements earth, air, fire and water, are associated with the four humours melancholic, sanguine, choleric and phlegmatic. It was thought that an imbalance in the humours caused illness and could be redressed by changing the patient's diet, prescribing medicine, carrying out surgery or through bleeding. This artwork titled Cabalistic Adam was published in Collectio Operum by Robert Fludd (1574-1637).
