Ignatz of 'Krazy Kat' has always been a favorite character of mine. Herriman's cartoon style heavily influenced my own personal landscape style. I don't remember when I first saw Krazy Kat, but I think I must have been in the third grade when I first got my library card to Washington Elementary School Library in Evansville. I drew Ignatz but not the cat... Herriman's style is also similar to Philip Guston's (which I like) cartoon style yet not as loose in line but is in character. My nickname by the way in school was "mouse". I was only 4'5". Charlie Spear was born in 1948 in the Midwest. The era of Modern Art was in full swing with the Sixties generating an artistic smorgasbord of art styles and new media. Much of his early career was spent learning about art through teaching art. His imagery grew out of early television and graphic media. Spear paints both as a landscape painter and an abstractionist which characterizes his ecclectic tendencies. Philip Guston has had an influence on his art of recent. Exploring the art media's physical qualities is an important element in his style coupled with an atavistic love of an expressionistic drawing style.
