About the Image

Immunofluorescent Lm Of Hela Cancer Cells by Dr Gopal Murti

HeLa cells. Immunofluorescent light micrograph of HeLa cancer culture cells. Their nuclei are orange, while the microtubules of their cyto- skeletons are green. At centre is a dividing cell. HeLa cells were established in 1952 as the first human cell line to research cancer. The cells were named after Henrietta Lacks, from whose cervix they were obtained. HeLa cancer cells are used worldwide as they grow unusually well in the laboratory. In immunofluorescence, antibodies are used to attach fluorescent dyes to specific cell tissues. In this case the nuclei have been stained with propidium iodide and the microtubules with anti-tubulin antibody. Magnification unknown.

About the Artist - Dr Gopal Murti

Dr Gopal Murti

Science Photo Library was founded in 1981 by Michael Marten, one of the authors of "Worlds Within Worlds", a book exploring different ways to observe the universe - from electron micrographs, to images of earthrise taken from the Apollo spacecraft. When Marten started receiving requests for the beautiful images in the book, he had an idea of setting up Science Photo Library. Since then, Science Photo Library has continued to work alongside world acclaimed photographers and the leading science and medical experts to provide a central source of the best science and specialist imagery available. Although the collection started with scientific images, it has grown to encompass all aspects of science and their impact on everyday life.
