Artist's Description

My grandmother planted irises, my mother transplanted the irises of my grandmother. When I bought my home and studio in America, I did like-wise - planting and tending three generations of irises of my own. As the seasons change here in Tokyo, the narrow strips of cultivated earth along my new Koto neighborhood sidewalks burst into bloom. What a joy it was for me to find so many remarkable irises here in Japan - well-tended by the local grandmothers whose love of the earth seems so similar to that of my own heritage. In seeing these beautiful flowers I sensed the history of myself and the deeper presence of my new but strangely familiar home. ** Please contact the artist for further details **
