This celebrity portrait was painted in my studio by looking at a photo as if the Prime Minister were actually sitting in my studio. A candid photo of Canada's Prime Minister, the right honourable Jean Chretien, star of the political stage, with his wife was commissioned by the proud grandmother of two children who were chosen to present gifts to the stately couple at a local function. I am always fascinated by painters who create portraits of prominent figures - it usually being so complicated to get legal access to the reference material used as well as getting legal written permission from either the lawyer or the prominent person him or herself. Profiting from someone's "visage" is such a complex business affair.

Thank you for your comment, Bernard. The lady who commissioned the original painting worked on Mr. Chretien's election campaign. When the original painting (which included her grandchildren) was complete she took it to the Prime Minister for his autograph. I have a number of photos of him signing the original painting.
