This is another early sculpture, made around 1982. I knew many of the deer who gathered around our Wyoming cabin each winter. In the early spring, even while deep snowdrifts remained, a few sheltered spots would begin to sprout grass. At the first whiff of this, the deer would go crazy with joy, jumping, leaping, rearing, kicking up their heels and expressing their gladness to have survived another rough winter. I am currently working on a new version of this sculpture featuring 3 deer, but it might take me a while to finish it because the first deer that I completed got knocked off a shelf and broke, so I will have to do major repairs.

I have been an artist since I was knee high to a short-horned locust. My dad, Willoughby Senior (FAA) was a professional artist and writer and I have stepped in his shoes since I was born, though he drew horses better than I did when I was a kid. My family lived in a hand-hewn log cabin we built ourselves in the foothills of the Rocky Mountains and had no water or electricity. I love my life with my husband and family in Wyoming among the horses, gophers, deer, antelope, coyotes, red-tailed hawks, and the wild landscape. My work is driven by the land, animals, wild plants and birds I have come to know so well. Hummingbirds still try to get nectar from my upturned fingers. My artwork consists of all these things and more...
