About the Image

Kitchen and Fat Pots by Muyiwa OSIFUYE

Here is a woman who has to prepare a delicacy from guinea corn, to be sold in the neighbourhood as she or with the assistance of her kids after school-hawk around. It is common for Nigerian housewives to eke out a living, to augment the family general income. African housewives are good at this extra efforts. There are some consumers waiting for the food at an assured hour, every day. The hot porridge is made in these huge iron pots. At this moment the happy daughter beckons at the mother and thereafter the girl retreats to their room in this slum. The relation on the right is doing her laundry. Every available space in many slums is used. I took this picture when on assignment for my work for the 50th Venice Biennale in Italy.
