The F-8-F was a single engined fighter also powered by a 2000 horsepower 18 cylinder, air cooled engine and was called the "Bear Cat." It was the smallest and lightest single seat fighter that could be designed around this magnificent powerplant and had a superior rate of climb and general performance compared to any other single seat fighter powered by a propeller until it was retired in preference to jets after 1945. However it did continue in use in other allied countries for some period of time after the introduction of jets in the service of the U.S. Navy.

An F-7-F Twin R2800 Pratt and whitney engines, tri cycle gear, good loiter time, very fast and quite manuverable. Excellent escort fighter but came along late in the war. Great potential and used later as fire tankers.Built by the Gruman Iron Works. Was used by Marines briefly before being replaced with Jets such as the F-9-F. It was one of the best twin engined fighters of WW 2 but arrived late like the F-8-F in my opinion the best prop driven single seat fighter of the war.
