About the Image

Linear Accelerator by David Parker

TESLA accelerator component. Technician in clean room clothing checking a resonator for use in the TESLA (Tera-electron Volt Energy Superconducting Linear Accelerator). This niobium resonator will be cooled to -271 degrees Celsius, 2 degrees above absolute zero, at which temperature it will become a superconductor. A 33 kilometre path of these will accelerate electrons and positrons (anti- electrons) using magnetic fields, colliding them at the path's centre. This will be used to study the nature of matter in the universe. In addition to this, the facility will be able to create X-ray lasers, which will be able to visualise individual atoms. This work is being done at DESY in Germany.

About the Artist - David Parker

David Parker

Science Photo Library was founded in 1981 by Michael Marten, one of the authors of "Worlds Within Worlds", a book exploring different ways to observe the universe - from electron micrographs, to images of earthrise taken from the Apollo spacecraft. When Marten started receiving requests for the beautiful images in the book, he had an idea of setting up Science Photo Library. Since then, Science Photo Library has continued to work alongside world acclaimed photographers and the leading science and medical experts to provide a central source of the best science and specialist imagery available. Although the collection started with scientific images, it has grown to encompass all aspects of science and their impact on everyday life.
