I wanted this painting to look like the lion was in Africa. The closest I could come to that was to exaggerate the things I have known so that someone would think it was Africa.

We have cougars here and it seemed to me that if possible, lions could almost live on our countryside so I took trees from around here.

Skies in Southern California are often very colorful. This red sky and yellow setting sun in the painting are exaggerations of ones here. The cliff is commonplace in So. CA since when the rains come they can be severe and carve deep channels.

Thank heaven we do not have lions in So. Cal. but we have cougars which are often called Mountain Lions.

FINDING INSPIRATION TO CREATE FINE ART Nature is an inspiration for many of Jans paintings. She feels encouraged to paint by her surroundings at home in Trabuco Canyon. There are four huge Live Oaks on her property and people have horses, a goat and chickens nearby. There are about a hundred homes in this rural California community at an elevation of about 500 feet at the base of Saddleback Mountain. It gets hot in the summer and rains for a few weeks in the winter. MISSION SAN JUAN CAPISTRANO Jan fell in love with Mission San Juan Capistrano that is a short drive from her home.
