Lung cancer cell, coloured transmission electron micrograph (TEM). This cell has the typical morphology of a cancer cell. The nucleus (orange) is greatly enlarged and multilobed and there are many small projections coming off of the cell wall. The nucleus contains chromatin (dark orange), a complex of DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) and proteins. The most common cause of lung cancer is cigarette smoke. Magnification x2050 when printed at 10 centimetres wide.
