About the Image

Martin Luther Monument Dresden by Christine Till

The German Augustinian monk and professor of theology Martin Luther strongly disputed the claim that freedom from God's punishment of sin could be purchased with money. In 1517 the priest initiated the Protestant Reformation by nailing his "Ninety-Five Theses" to the church door in Wittenberg, Germany. This led to a split in the Church, dividing it into the Protestant and Catholic branches. Luther also was the first to translate the Bible into German, so that everyone was able to read and understand it. The in 1885 erected Martin Luther statue near the restored Frauenkirche (Church of Our Lady) in Dresden, Germany, survived the firebombing of Dresden during World War II.
