Mini Cactus Garden in Rock by Brian Pinkey

This is a small canvas I took to Joshua Tree National Park. I set up wedged in a narrow strip with this little growth in front of me. It was growing from a split in the granite rocks that had collected some soil. I loved the still life effect of it, though it was a natural formation. It was pretty uncomfortable wedged in the spot where I sat. I tried to do it actual sized.

Born early 1950s, to an Army officer and his wife, in California. My early years memories started a couple years later, in Albuquerque NM. Dad was in Korea, and I remember looking for him when the soldiers walked home in the evenings, not understanding where he was then. We moved often, and I was always facinated with the scenery changing through the window of the car. The Army moved families in the summer, and the motels and diners became a high point for me, later re-lived. We went to Germany, only 15 years after WW2, and I have many thoughts of there and those times. My early report cards have comments like " Brian is a good student, but spends too much time drawing in class." I guess all children draw, but some of us never...
