Karen MacKenzie grew up on a beach on the western peninsula of Washington state in an old farmhouse with six siblings and bohemian parents. She was encouraged from an early age to be creative, and was drawn to painting and drawing in step with her mother's interest in art. Her father's love of literature and history fed her imagination as well, and she was given free-reign to explore any subject. Having developed an adventurous spirit, she traveled after high school and lived in Canada and Hawaii before moving to Seattle to attend Cornish College of the Arts.
