This painting is an abstract painting of a Navajo Masked god, known as a Yei. Usually the chants and songs are sung during the winter time when it is safe to conduct the ceremonies. The songs which tell a hero's journey to evoke the Holy beings to help a patient are sung with a Gourd Rattle. In this painting he is using a Guitar representing a shift from the archaic rattle to a modern day instrument representing the Navajo's peoples slow acculturation into modern society and letting the past go.

For the last 14 years I've been painting, making jewelry, and have been in the Armed Services. I grew up in Fort Defiance, Arizona in Northern Arizona and after high school I made the decision to defend my country just as my father Alvin E. Begaye, (CPT US Army) and grandfathers before me did, first as a United States Marine, and eventually as a Soldier in the U.S. Army.
