As a backcountry skier and snowboarder in my younger (and dumber) days, I was quick to take advantage of the access I had to snowy mountain peaks when the passes open in the spring. With a minimum of hiking, I was able to get to some amazing terrain and often times, get picked up by a vehicle on a road down below. Late May is typically an especially good opportunity to do this with several of Colorado's high mountain passes reopening for the summer.

One of my favorite locations to do this was Independence Pass which provides a summer only direct route from Leadville over the mountains to Aspen with a summit elevation of 12,095 feet. My plan was to drive there in the evening and after some quick scouting, catch up on some sleep while the Milky Way got into position.
