Nightshade has a long and fascinating history. It was used in poisons, but also in "truth serums". However, the drinker of the potion was quite apt to believe whatever was told to him or her. Nightshade, or Belladonna, was also used by women as eye drops to dilate their pupils. We are programed physiologically to like people and creatures with large pupils, as it means their brain is telling their eyes to open up and let more in- they like what they are seeing- they like us! If women had larger pupils, they were instantly more attractive to men. Queen Elizabeth was even known to use these Belladonna drops almost daily. I find it fascinating the lengths we go to for acceptance from others, instead of finding our own truths. To celebrate the dichotomy and wonderful history of the Nightshade, I created this bas-relief floral scene on highly textured plaster, and I incorporated impressions of tiny torches from my hand carved block in the background, a long standing symbol for Truth.
