The Outer Banks, a strip of barrier islands off the coast of North Carolina, have an association with an infamous moniker: the Graveyard of the Atlantic. Two opposing currents collide just offshore: the Gulf (warm) and the Labrador (cold). The collision results in shoaling, a shifting pattern of sand bars that make sailing in these waters a dangerous undertaking.

A favorable sky found me on the beach this morning where a tragic accident resulted in the beaching of two sailboats along Cape Hatteras National Seashore. A large part of me didn't want to photograph the scene as it seemed like somehow an intrusion on someone's hardship; however, the situation was such an illustrative one for the particular place.
