You're sure right on as far as having to almost literally dig them out. Many like that here.

Wow...Thank you Don for this awesome comment, we have quite a few here too, but you have to search through all the brush and trees!

This is really a great shot Ms Judi. You've done a very good job of showing what it's all about, and your notes fill in any spaces people may not understand about what they are seeing. We have hundreds, if not thousands, of this type of thing here in Kansas, but we call them tornado shelters, or more commonly, just 'caves.' This is cool. Uh, no pun intended. f/v

Artist's Description

Ice houses are buildings used to store ice throughout the year, commonly used prior to the invention of the refrigerator. Some were underground chambers, usually man-made, close to natural sources of winter ice such as freshwater lakes, but many were buildings with various types of insulation. During the winter, ice and snow would be taken into the ice house and packed with insulation, often straw or sawdust. It would remain frozen for many months, often until the following winter, and could be used as a source of ice during summer months. The main application of the ice was the storage of perishable foods, but it could also be used simply to cool drinks, or allow ice-cream and sorbet desserts to be prepared.

His love remains with me and within my own photography captures. While living in New York and working psych I suffered an unexpected spinal injury that changed my life.... I moved back to Wisconsin, where I was born . I picked up my camera again and started shooting anything and everything that I found interesting. I never go any where without my camera. While living with level 10 pain and walking with a cane ( at times I...
