In the 1700s , men guarding the shorelines sent small, shallow boats to save shipwrecked people that were yelling for help. This developed into the United States Lifesaving Service. Then in the 1800s, swimming became increasingly popular as a recreational activity.Seeing a business opportunity people built resorts in places like Atlantic City to attract summer vacationers to swim at the beach.
